T.J. Barron wins first surf meet as a pro

Less than two months since turning professional, T.J. Barron of Sunset Beach won his first pro surfing contest on Sunday.

Barron, 18, won the Ferrolterra Pantin Classic in 3- to 5-foot waves at Pantin, Spain.

Barron had a two-wave total of 17.53 in the final, including a near-perfect 9.53. Alain Riou from French Polynesia was second with a two-wave score of 12.50.

Barron received $5,000 for the victory. The contest was part of surfing's World Qualifying Series.

Ex-Islander to play in Connolly Cup

Former Hawai'i resident Judy (Leong) Louie has been selected to play for the United States team at the 2004 Maureen Connolly Cup.

The international team competition between women 55 and older will be Sept. 12 to 18 at Germantown Cricket Club in Philadelphia. Others on the team are Anne Guerrant of Arizona, Trish Faulkner of Florida and captain Brenda Carter of South Carolina.

Louie grew up in Hawai'i, and attended University of Hawai'i. She now lives in Corona del Mar, Calif.

The U.S. won the Connolly Cup last year in Turkey. The team format features two singles and one doubles point per match.

Louie, 59, also played on the Cup team in 2001, in Australia, and has been part of the Young Cup team and Bueno Cup team overseas in past years.

"You represent your country like in the Olympics and meet all the people from the other countries," Louie says. "We don't all speak the same language, but somehow we communicate."

Louie has won several national age-group titles, including this year's 55 clay court doubles championship.



KITEBOARDING

King of Air event coming to Maui

An international field of the top kiteboarders is expected for the Red Bull King of the Air competition scheduled for Sept. 23 to 25 at Ho'okipa Beach on Maui.

A series of qualifiers were held in Mexico, Italy, New Zealand and Belgium for the Maui contest, which offers $26,000 in prize money.

Competition will be held in freestyle (height, distance, maneuvers) and hangtime (longest time in the air).

Kiteboarder reach heights of 40 to 60 feet and fly more than 100 feet while pulling off moves.

Last year's hangtime winner, Marcus Austin, was airborne for 7.29 seconds. The women's hangtime winner, Julie Gilbert, was clocked at 5.1 seconds.

Some of the competitors scheduled to compete are previous King of the Air champions Charles Deleau, Mark Shinn, Susi Mai and Sheldon Plentovich.



GOLF

Chun wins Barbers Point Invitational

Mark Chun defeated Mike Trevino in a playoff Sunday to win the Barbers Point Invitational Tournament.

Chun, who shot a final-round 75, and Trevino (70) were tied at 212 after 54 holes.

Russ McGarry (74—223) won the Senior flight; John Manumaleuna (78—228) beat Reynaldo Cabato (73—228) in a playoff to win A flight, and Wayne Yamamoto (77—238) won B flight.
