Faced with an emergency lockdown yesterday, the principal at Kawananakoa Middle School said she was glad the school had prepared.

Kawananakoa and Ma'ema'e Elementary were locked down for about an hour yesterday morning as police scoured the Nu'uanu area for two burglary suspects.

A 30-year-old man was arrested near a Nu'uanu Avenue home shortly after a break-in was reported, but officers on the ground and from the air searched the neighborhood for a second suspect, who remained at large yesterday afternoon.

At about 10 a.m., the Department of Education's safety and security office notified the two schools that a police situation was going on nearby, and recommended that the schools be locked down, said Kawananakoa Principal Sandra Ishihara-Shibata. She said the nearly 830 students were at recess at the time.

She said the school bell was rung in a way to signal an emergency, and she was impressed with how quickly the students responded.

"It took us less than six minutes to get the students, and the students knew exactly where to go — they went to their classes," said Ishihara-Shibata. "We locked all the doors and we just waited and conducted classes."

Within minutes, the DOE called and gave the all-clear, she said.

Ishihara-Shibata said the school had practiced lockdowns twice, during class and during lunch. Yesterday was the first time in the two years she's been at the school that the procedure had to be applied.

"This happened during recess, so the practices helped. And the students had gone through the exercises, so they know what it is," she said.
