Maui child dies from injuries

KULA, Maui — A 2-year-old Maui girl has died from injuries received Aug. 31 when the pickup truck her mother was driving hit a rock wall on Haleakala Highway near lower Kimo Drive in Kula.

Alia Leilani Nature was taken off life support Friday and pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center, police said.

Police said the girl's mother, Nicolette Leilani Klukowski, 21, of Makawao, was driving a 1998 Ford Ranger pickup southbound on the highway at about 10:35 p.m. when it drifted onto the right shoulder and struck the wall.

The traffic death was the 12th of the year in Maui County, compared with 10 a year ago.



Man charged in Monday shooting

KAILUA, Hawai'i — A 21-year-old Kona man was charged with first-degree attempted murder, six counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, six counts of first-degree reckless endangering, three firearms offenses and one count of criminal property damage in connection with a shooting early Monday at the Coconut Grove Marketplace in Kailua.

Police said that at about 1:45 a.m., Matthew Eric Johnson allegedly shot Melanaea Mather, 21, of Honomu, in the lower torso and fired at a 28-year-old man whose cellular phone was damaged by the gunshot. People in the parking lot subdued the suspect and took a .25-caliber semi-automatic pistol from him.

Mather was reported in stable condition at Kona Community Hospital. Johnson was being held in lieu of $114,300 bail.

Lt. Paul Kealoha said investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the shootings. School employee arrested in fight

Police arrested a 64-year-old Mililani High School faculty member yesterday following an altercation at the school.

Police said two men were arguing on campus yesterday morning when one of the men hit the other on the head with a folder. Police said the 64-year-old man and the 44-year-old man are Department of Education employees.

Police were called to the school and arrested the older man about 10:45 a.m. on one count of second-degree assault. He was released pending further investigation at 2 p.m.



Man arrested on threat charges

A 21-year-old Makakilo man was arrested on suspicion of terroristic threatening and multiple misdemeanors after an incident at the Kapolei Shopping Center Tuesday night. Police said the man was drinking at a bar in the shopping center at about 9:30 p.m. when he grabbed a waitress and threatened to kill her and the establishment's manager.
