Su, Ouchi capture Kapalua singles tennis titles

The 24th Annual Kapalua Open Tennis Championships finished Sunday. More than 180 players entered the four separate categories of competition, all held at Kapalua Tennis Garden over the weekend.

Wei Yu Su, of Honolulu, defeated Malino Oda, of O'ahu, 7-6 (3), 7-4, in the men's open division, while Lahaina's Kimmie Ouchi overcame Kathleen Martin, of Palm Desert, Calif., 6-1, 6-0, in the women's open division.

Ross Duncan, of Oregon, and Erik Sandbloom, of O'ahu, beat Jay Grollman of Lihu'e, Kaua'i and Su, 6-4, 6-4, for the men's doubles title. Brooke Gannon, of Kula, Maui, and Ouchi teamed to beat Martin and Linda Roland, of Oregon, 6-4, 6-2, in the women's doubles final.



RUNNING

Front Street Mile scheduled for Lahaina

Americans Michael Stember, a 2000 Olympian, and Dan Browne, a 2004 Olympian, will race with other world class milers in the elite category of the Front Street Mile in Lahaina, Maui, Sept. 18.

Jason Lunn, the 2003 1,500-meter U.S. national champion, will also be in the field.

The race is scheduled for 3 p.m. and is held in conjunction with the Maui Marathon, which follows the next day.

The Front Street Mile is open to the public.

Medals will be given to the top 10 finishers.
