Lingle's office receives rigged letter

Associated Press

A spokesman for Governor Lingle says her office received a rigged letter in the mail today.

Federal and state investigators are questioning Nevada inmates about letters found rigged with a match to ignite when the envelope is torn open. Booby-trapped envelopes addressed to top officials have turned up in a dozen states so far. None of the envelopes contained any message.

Lingle spokesman Russell Pang says the letter that came to Hawaii was NOT opened because the governor's staff had been alerted by the Department of Homeland Security. Pang says state Civil Defense is handling the matter.

Officials say each of the letters sent to the other states had a return address from Nevada's maximum-security prison. One of two inmates was listed as the sender, but authorities say they're not sure if either is involved.

Several governors and a Nevada prison official got such letters yesterday and today. The match flared in three cases, but no one was hurt.

The Montana Capitol was partly evacuated yesterday when the match burned the letter opened there.
