Freeway lanes to be closed

The H-3 Freeway will be closed in the Honolulu-bound direction between the Halekou and Halawa interchanges from 7 p.m. tomorrow to 7 a.m. Sunday for tunnel cleaning.



Meeting focuses on Kailua's future

Landowner Kane'ohe Ranch will continue the discussion about the vision for Kailua at a public meeting from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Kailua Intermediate School cafeteria, 145 Kainalu Drive.

Residents previously have indicated that they value a diverse community that supports families and they place a high priority on caring for the environment.



HPU ceremony will mark Sept. 11

A brief ceremony commemorating "A Day of Peace" and those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today on the upper grassy knoll of the Hawai'i Pacific University's windward Hawai'i Loa campus. A Peace Corps representative will officially plant HPU's Peace Pole.

HPU chaplain the Rev. Dale Burke will offer a prayer and the HPU International Vocal Ensemble will perform. Adam Liss, president of the Hawai'i Peace Corps Volunteer Association, will lead the dedication of the Peace Pole.



Sunset on Beach at Waimanalo

Waimanalo Beach Park will host its first Sunset on the Beach with movies, entertainment, displays, boxing and food by local restaurants from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday.

The Waimanalo Construction Coalition is planning the event with the help of the city and local businesses.

Activities include a children's center, health expo, Hawaiian Island Creations surf village, a classic car display, rides, games and a marketplace.

Fifteen local restaurants will feature their ethnic and signature dishes.

Entertainment on Saturday includes Believe, Simplicity, Moana Allen, Hawaiian Pride, Guy Benson, Neutral Ground, Country Cruze, A'amele, Imua and others. Sunday's lineup will include Seven Simple Pieces, Freestyle XP, Noeau, Neutral Ground, Hawaiian Pride, Guy Benson & Friends, 41 Dash, Ernie Cruz, Country Fire, an Natural Vibes with Christian of Hoonua.

Special Guests include The Braddahs, Augie and Lanai, Cary Tagawa, Matty Lui and Kainoa Mcgee.

The movies begin at 7:30 p.m. and are "The Rundown" (PG-13) tomorrow and "50 First Dates" (PG-13) Sunday.

The event is free but people are asked to donate canned or non-perishable food to Hawaii Food Bank. A shuttle will run from Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate School and Waimanalo District Park.

Parking is free, but a $2 donation is requested for the Waimanalo Football Association.



Maui pool closing for maintenance

KAHULUI, Maui — The Kahului Pool, on Kaulawahine Street, will close for maintenance starting Monday, the Department of Parks and Recreation announced. It will reopen Sept. 20.

Royal court for festivals chosen

WAILUKU, Maui — Conch shell blowing and Hawaiian chanting will set the stage for the investiture of Maui's Aloha Festivals royal court from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow at 'Iao Valley State Park.

During the ceremony, the ali'i will be dressed in colorful customary attire as they receive makana (gifts) of royalty including a royal cloak, helmet, niho palaoa (whale bone necklace) and feather lei. Court members were chosen based on their love of Hawaiian history and culture and other factors.

The court members, all Wailuku residents, will preside over Aloha Festivals activities on Maui and participate in other events throughout the next year. They are King Kamuela Samuel Kauilani Jr., a construction laborer; Queen Sandra Leina'ala Hapakuka Lono, a Department of Education employee; Princes Steven Kapena Ikaika Kuailani, a Maui Community College student; Gavin Kaniela Hapakuka, a 2004 graduate of Baldwin High School; and Princess Lapree Puaolena Maraeile Park, an MCC student.



Free seminar on Alzheimer's

WAILUKU, Maui — Findings of a national study on Alzheimer's and dementia in the Japanese-American community will be discussed during a free seminar from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Maui Okinawa Cultural Center in Wailuku.

The seminar is being presented by the Maui County Office on Aging, Project Dana and the Alzheimer's Association-Aloha Chapter. Appearing will be Kathy Martelli of the Geriatrics Neurobehavior Center of the Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Downey, Calif.

Forestry grants available

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, is accepting grant applications for the Kaulunani Urban Forestry, cost-share, tree planting and education grant programs.

The application deadlines are Sept. 30, Nov. 15 and Feb. 15, 2005.

Generally, cost-share grants are between $500 and $10,000, but larger projects are considered. Grants are available to non-federal organizations for projects that improve Hawai'i's urban forest.

Funding is available in five categories: tree planting in public areas, educational or informational programs, technical tree care programs, Arbor Day activities, and partnership enhancement projects.
