$300,000 raised for museum

The sixth annual Bernice Pauahi Bishop Awards Dinner raised more than $300,000 for Bishop Museum. The event featured a gourmet dinner, silent auction, entertainment, awards program, diamond ring giveaway and unveiling of items from Pauahi's personal collection.



Art center gives $2,000 to band

The O'ahu Art Center board has donated $2,000 to the Mililani High School Band.

The board is raising money to build a $20 million arts center in Mililani Mauka that will include a theater, classrooms and studios.



Senior finance program gets aid

The Safeway Foundation has awarded a grant of $10,000 to Catholic Charities Hawai'i for its Financial Advocacy Services for seniors on Maui.

The service, which grew out of a survey by Catholic Charities that determined that many seniors need help managing their money — provides budget preparation and aid such as bill sorting.



Goodwill receives gift of $15,000

Goodwill Industries of Hawaii has been awarded $15,000 by the Atherton Family Foundation to buy an automated Point of Sale System to support the agency's donation and retail division on O'ahu and in Hilo.

The new system will allow Goodwill to streamline daily retail operations and allow the staff to focus more on providing job services and support services for people with disabilities.



Long foundation helps lupus group

The founders of Longs Drug Stores, through the J.M. Long Foundation, have donated $25,000 to the Hawaii Lupus Foundation.

The Foundation's Youth Outreach campaign, YO! Lupus Hawaii, will benefit from the grant. The campaign focuses on early diagnosis, treatment and coping for youths with lupus.



Obesity research given $48,300

The University of Hawai'i at Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources was awarded a $48,300 grant from the Hawai'i Community Foundation's Ingeborg V.F. McKee Fund to support studies on muscle-fat tissue interactions and obesity prevention.

According to Dr. Jinzeng Yang of the college's Department of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Sciences, there is reason to be concerned about the increase in juvenile obesity in Hawai'i.
