HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS
4th-quarter rally lifts Castle to victory over Kailua, 29-28

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

Castle's Jordan Nakayama had a chance to live out every backup quarterback's dream last night against Kailua.

Lauton "Makana" Atisanoe (21) and Nicholas Tepea (20) try to bring down Castle's Victor Clore in their OIA East game at Mililani High School field. Castle defeated Kailua, 29-28.

Nakayama, the Knights' No. 3 quarterback, directed two fourth-quarter touchdown drives to lift Castle (3-1, 2-0) to a 29-28 victory over Kailua (2-2, 1-1) in an Oahu Interscholastic Association East Conference game at Mililani.

The first scoring pass, a 10-yarder to Lihikai Domingo, cut Castle's deficit to 28-21 with 11:30 remaining in the game.

Nakayama's 60-yard touchdown pass to Blaine Kobashigawa with 2:25 left made the score 28-27, but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against a Kailua player at the end of the play moved the extra point attempt to the 1 1/2-yard line.

The Knights elected to go for two, and Tarann Bajet crossed the goal line on a run up the middle.

"No we wouldn't have," Castle head coach Nelson Maeda said when asked if he would have gone for two without the penalty. "That was a very crucial penalty. When we saw that Kailua DB throw his helmet down we knew it was going to be unsportsmanlike conduct, we knew it would be half the distance to the goal."

Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich added: "Discipline is something we need to work on and we will work on it."

Kailua's final drive ended when Castle linebacker Keoni Gomes penetrated into Kailua's backfield and disrupted a handoff by Kelroy Kohatsu. John Ufuti recovered and Castle was able to run out the clock.

Nakayama, who entered late in the third quarter for Louis Mansanas Jr., finished 4 of 7 for 117 yards.

"I'll take any playing time I get," Nakayama said. "That's all I want."

Castle's projected starter, Bryce Kalauokaaea, injured his knee earlier this season and probably won't play this season.

"He did an outstanding job considering he's our No. 3 QB," Maeda said. "He doesn't get a lot of reps. He came in and directed the offense and did a great job."

Kobashigawa caught five passes for 173 yards and three touchdowns.

Kailua's Damien Torres rushed 30 times for 273 yards, including three touchdowns in the third quarter when the Surfriders outscored Castle 28-7.

"He was making the plays, he's our go-to guy and we went to him," Rosolowich said.
