Ting opens with 82 at Women's Mid-Am

Wailuku's Desiree Ting shot a 10-over 82 in the first round of stroke play at the 18th U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur yesterday at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
Ting is tied for 64th place. She opened with a 42 on the front nine and closed with a 40. Shannon Ogg of Seattle, Wash., leads with a 1-under 71 (34-37). Ogg was the only player to card a under-par round.
Former University of Hawai'i golfer Sandra Nakagaki, of Culver, Calif., is tied for 29th at 39-4079.
The tournament is open to female amateurs 25 and older. Ting qualified by shooting a 74 at Dunes at Maui Lani last month.
The second round of stroke play will be today, where the field will be cut to the top 64.

BYUH, Chaminade lose matches in La'ie
Thomas Hopkins scored eight goals to lead top-ranked Stanford past 14th-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 17-7, last night in La'ie.
Kevin Van Haaster and All-American Vanja Kalabic scored two goals apiece to lead the Seasiders (2-1), who also got scores from Dutch Turley, Vlada Stankovic and Jordan Brink. Peter Varellas added five goals for the Cardinal (2-0).
Goran Milic scored six goals as California Baptist defeated Chaminade, 20-7, yesterday in La'ie. Shawn Phillips and Milos Matijebac each scored twice in Chaminade's season opener. Cal Baptist is 2-0.

Lambert, Kiraly get top seed in Las Vegas
Punahou graduate Mike Lambert and Karch Kiraly have earned the top seed in the $150,000 Aquafina AVP Shootout this weekend in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Las Vegas site is the last stop before the tournament arrives at Queen's Beach, Waikiki, on Sept. 23 to 25. The Las Vegas tournament concludes today.
Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs are the women's top seed.
Correction
Paul Shin's daughters were misidentified in a photo on yesterday's Total Rec page. Vanessa was on the left and Breanna on the right in the "Catch of the Day" photo. Also, Paul Shin said the weight of the 40-pound ulua was as heavy as Vanessa, not both daughters, as was stated in yesterday's story.
