'Shark Tale' inspires artworks on the sea

Advertiser Staff

Move over Shrek, the sharks are hitting the big screen again. This time, "Jaws" is taking a backseat to the animated family comedy "Shark Tale," opening Oct. 1.

Coinciding with the opening, Mayor Jeremy Harris, DreamWorks Animation and the state Department of Education are sponsoring a citywide art event for local schools.

"I especially welcome the opportunity to introduce this program to our students and encourage them to embrace the ocean and submit their best efforts," Harris said.

The contest is called "Show & Tale Us What About the Ocean Inspires You!" Students in grades K-12 may submit original artwork to their teacher on ocean life — and sharks — using any medium of choice (painting, drawing, mixed media and/or coloring).

Each grade category will be awarded prizes from the movie, with a grand prize winner to receive:

• A private screening of "Shark Tale."

• Free Hewlett Packard PC Computer for school of winning student.

• $500 worth of art supplies for student's classroom.

• Weekend stay at Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel for the winner and their family.

The deadline for submissions is Sept. 21, with awards presented at "Brunch on the Beach" on Sept. 26.
