Ting reaches match play of U.S. Mid-Amateur golf

Wailuku's Desiree Ting shot a 4-over-par 76 yesterday to secure a berth in the match play portion of the 18th U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur at Knoxville, Tenn.

Ting finished tied for 39th in the two-round qualifying with a 14-over 158 total. The top 64 players — the cutoff was 162 — advanced to match play at the 6,228-yard Holston Hills Country Club course.

Ting will play Debbie Adams, of Biltmore Forest, N.C., today.

Sandra Nakagaki, a former University of Hawai'i golfer now living in Culver City, Calif., also qualified with a 158 total. She will meet Marianne Towersey, of Newport Beach, Calif., today.

Tobi Probst, of Pensacola, Fla., won medalist honors after shooting 73—146.



CROSS COUNTRY

BYUH's Smith, HPU's Stevens prevail again

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Chelsea Smith and Hawai'i Pacific's Matt Stevens won their second consecutive meets of the Hawai'i collegiate cross country season yesterday.

Smith, the defending NCAA Division II champion, captured the women's 5-kilometer race at the Hawai'i-Hilo Invitational in 17 minutes, 46 seconds. Hawai'i-Manoa's Chantelle Laan finished second in 19:28.

The Seasiders, with five runners among the top nine finishers, easily won with 27 points. Hawai'i-Manoa was second with 62 points, followed by Hawai'i-Hilo (66) and Chaminade (83).

Stevens won the men's 6-kilometer race in 19 minutes, 41 seconds. Hawai'i-Hilo's Gustavo Arceo finished second in 20:04.

BYUH and Hawai'i-Hilo shared team honors with 47 points apiece. Hawai'i Pacific (55) was third and Chaminade (75) fourth.



SOCCER

Duke captures Outrigger tournament

Casey McCluskey scored two goals as Duke defeated Long Beach State, 3-0, last night to clinch the title of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Duke (4-2) also beat host Hawai'i Friday night.

The Rainbow Wahine (3-2-1) play Long Beach State (3-1-1) tomorrow night at 5.



WATER POLO

No. 14 BYUH beats No. 20 Cal Baptist

Vanja Kalabic scored four goals as No. 14 Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat No. 20 Cal Baptist, 14-9, in a men's water polo match at La'ie.

Vlada Stankovic added three goals for BYUH (3-1). Brett Peterson had three goals for Cal Baptist.

In a later match, Darren Netzley and Alex Smith each had four goals as Cal Baptist (3-1) defeated Chaminade, 13-6. Shawn Phillips and Milos Matijebac had two goals each for Chaminade (0-2).



MEETING

UH coach Jones to speak at QB Club

Hawai'i head football coach June Jones is scheduled to speak at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom.

Also scheduled to appear are UH associate football coach George Lumpkin, local TV personality Dave Vinton and former Olympic volleyball player Jon Stanley.

Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m., with the program to follow at noon.
