GET THE DRIFT & BAG IT

HANAUMA LITTER CLEANUP

The Friends of Hanauma Bay will clean the beach, upper picnic area, parking lot and Kalaniana'ole Highway from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Bring photo ID to avoid $5 beach fee; parking validated.


HAWAIIAN BEACHES EFFORT

Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday to clear appliances, furniture, abandoned cars and other garbage illegally dumped along "Beach Road" at the end of Kahakai Boulevard in Hawaiian Beaches on the Big Island. POUHALA MARSH RESTORATION

The Hawai'i Nature Center is cleaning up and restoring the marsh, the largest remaining wetland habitat in Pearl Harbor. Volunteers are needed to pull pickleweed from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the following Saturdays: Sept. 25, Oct. 16, Nov. 13 and Dec. 4. Bring work gloves, water, hat, sunscreen, towel and change of clothes; covered footwear and long pants required. To sign up, contact Pauline Kawamata at 955-0100, Ext. 18.


PROTECT NATIVE PLANTS

Learn about rare native plants in a gorgeous location by volunteering to build trails, control invasive plants and plant native plants at the Pahole Natural Area Reserve on Oct. 2. Reservations are required for this Sierra Club service trip; call Ed Mersino at 455-8193.


SAVE THE WHALES

Storm-drain stenciling projects will take place on Maui from 8 to 11 a.m. Oct. 9 in Kihei and Oct. 16 in Lahaina. Call the Community Work Day program at (808) 877-2524 or Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary at (808) 879-2818.


MAKE A DIFFERENCE AT GARDEN

Celebrate Make a Difference Day by cleaning up Lili'uokalani Botanical Garden and Nu'uanu Stream from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 23. Boots, garbage bags and gloves provided; bring insect repellent, long-sleeved shirt and pants. Reservations are required; call 522-7064.

GREENING YOUR YARD

TOUR DE TRASH

Sign up for a Tour de Trash bus tour of Oahu's trashier side, provided by Honolulu's city Refuse Division. Get an up-close look at the recycling and waste-processing technology in operation on O'ahu. The Recycling and Waste Processors tour, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, starts and finishes at Kapolei Hale and visits the Ke'ehi Transfer Station on Middle Street, the H-POWER waste-to-energy plant, the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill, Hawaiian Earth Products, Hawai'i Medical Vitrification, Honolulu Recovery Systems, Hawai'i Metal Recycling and Lenox Metals. PHONE BOOK RECYCLING

Old telephone books can be dropped in any of the Community Recycling Center bins throughout O'ahu through September. Pickup is available for anyone with 400 or more phone books by calling Island Recycling at 845-1188.


FREE MULCH ON BIG ISLAND

Help yourself to free mulch from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily at a new public pickup area adjacent to the Kealakehe Transfer Station, or from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the Hilo Transfer Station. The county Department of Environmental Management sponsors the free mulch program. Loading assistance is available only at the Hilo location at a cost of $10 to $40, depending on vehicle size. Deliveries of large truckloads of mulch to homes, businesses or farms can be arranged by calling the Big Island Recycling representative at (808) 306-1876.
