'Evil' sequel takes residence at top of box-office heap

The sequel to a zombie movie based on a video game, "Resident Evil: Apocalypse," unseated the Chinese epic "Hero," which had held the top box-office spot for two weeks.

Zap2it.com reports that the second sci-fi "Resident Evil," right, starring Milla Jovovich, took in $23.7 million and had the third-best September opening in history, according to estimates by Exhibitor Relations, which tracks box-office receipts.

"Cellular," starring Kim Basinger, debuted in second place, bringing in $10.6 million in a lackluster weekend that was down about 11 percent over the same time last year. "Without a Paddle" brought in $4.57 million in third place.
