St. Francis grad Narkon honored

Liz Narkon, a 2000 St. Francis graduate, led the Western New Mexico women's volleyball team to a 4-0 record last week and was named Pacific West Conference Player of the Week.

Narkon amassed double-digit kills in victories against Grand Canyon (Ariz.), South Dakota State and two matches against Embry-Riddle (Ariz.).

For the season, Narkon has 258 kills and a .277 hitting percentage. She ranked 18th for kills per game (4.62) in NCAA rankings released last week.

Western New Mexico, which competes in NCAA Division II and is a member of the Pacific West Conference, is off to a 10-3 start.

Western New Mexico will play in Hawai'i later this month.



GOLF

Hawai'i's Odelius tied for seventh

University of Hawai'i sophomore Sara Odelius shot a 1-under-par 72 and was tied for seventh place after the opening round of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at Albuquerque, N.M.

Odelius had six birdies and five bogeys on the par-73, 6,069-yard Championship Course.

Georgia's Kelly Froelich leads with 68.

The Rainbow Wahine are 12th in the 17-school field following a 13-over 305.

Georgia leads after posting a 5-under 287.

Waikele's Kaneko leads assistant pro tourney

Scotty Kaneko of Waikele Golf Club shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Aloha Section PGA Assistant Professional Championship at the Ko Olina Golf Club.

Sheldon Sakamoto of Honolulu Country Club is second. Shane Abe of Oahu Country Club and Lance Taketa of Hilo Muni are tied for third at 74.

The final round will be played today, starting at 7 a.m.

The top two finishers will represent the Aloha Section at the national championships, Oct. 28 to 31, in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
