Police said the woman was heading west on the H-1 when she went from the center lane to the right lane. But the woman's car slowed "dramatically" and was struck from behind by a semi-truck at about 11:35 a.m., said Capt. Greg Lefcourt of the Kapolei police station.
Lefcourt said the collision forced the woman's car into the left lane, where she was broadsided by a sport utility vehicle. The woman was taken to St. Francis Medical Center-West and was pronounced dead at 1:15 p.m., he said.
The woman's identity was being withheld this afternoon, but she was tentatively identified as a Makakilo resident.
A 44-year-old man who was driving the SUV and his 41-year-old passenger were taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. Their conditions were upgraded this afternoon to serious condition.
The driver of the semi-truck was not seriously injured.
The west-bound lanes of the freeway were shut down soon after the accident while police conducted their investigation. The freeway was reopened at about 3:30 p.m.
