City transportation services director quits

City transportation director Cheryl Soon has resigned and will start a new job in the private sector, she announced yesterday.
Soon will leave her post tomorrow to become senior vice president of Marathon Group, a Hawai'i-based holding company.
She said she enjoyed working for the administration and is very proud of the city's transportation workforce. Among her disappointments, she said, were opposition to the BRT plan that limited the size of the project, and the wage dispute that led to a 34-day bus strike last year.
Mayor Jeremy Harris, who praised Soon's work, yesterday appointed her deputy, George "Keoki" Miyamoto, to head the department. Former city managing director Bob Fishman will replace Miyamoto as deputy.

Soon, who joined the Harris administration in 1995 as chief planning officer, has headed the Department of Transportation Services since 1997. Her duties included overseeing the bus fleet and planning the Bus Rapid Transit system.
