HPU sweeps BYU-Hawai'i

Flavia Brakling and Nadica Karleusa each had 13 kills as No. 10 Hawai'i Pacific swept No. 24 Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 30-18, 30-25, 30-22, last night in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball opener at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.
Brakling added nine digs and two aces to help the Sea Warriors improve to 7-1 overall.
HPU hit .420 for the match, with Brakling at .522, while holding BYUH to .080.
Yu Chuan Weng had 11 kills and four digs for the Seasiders, who fell to 6-3.
Hilo Muni's Taketa wins assistant tourney
Hilo Muni's Lance Taketa shot a 2-over-par 74 yesterday to capture the Aloha Section's Taylor Made-adidas PGA Assistant Professional Championship at Ko Olina Golf Club.
Taketa finished with a two-round total of 4-over 148 and a one-stroke victory over Waikele's Scotty Kaneko (78).
Taketa and Kaneko will represent the Aloha Section at the national assistant pro championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla., Oct. 28 to 31.
Rainbow Wahine remain in 12th place
The University of Hawai'i women's golf team remained 12th out of 17 schools yesterday after the second round of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at Albuquerque, N.M.
The Rainbow Wahine shot a 21-over 313 for a two-round total of 34-over 618. Georgia shot 299 to lead at 2-over 586.
UH sophomore Sara Odelius shot even-par 73 for a 1-under 145 total. She is tied for fifth, five strokes behind leader Karin Sjodin (69) of Oklahoma State.
Other Rainbow Wahine golfers competing are: Xyra Suyetsugu (75150), Dale Gammie (80156), Kari Sur (85168) and Megan Stoddart (88170).
BYUH turns back Cal Baptist in OT
The Brigham Young University-Hawai'i men's water polo team outlasted Cal Baptist, 11-9, in overtime Monday night at La'ie.
Seasider goalie Peter Caley stopped a career-high 16 shots and shut down the Lancers in overtime, while Vlada Stankovic scored the go-ahead goal.
Cal Baptist's Aaron Abellano scored with 18 seconds left in regulation, tying the score at 9-all and sending the match into overtime.
Vanja Kalabic and Jordan Brink each scored three goals for BYUH (4-1).
