Tonight's Must-See
"Survivor: Vanuatu" debut, 7 p.m., CBS. The best of the reality shows is back. It has changed a few rules, there are 18 contestants instead of 16 and some of the tribal councils are held at unexpected times, but it still has the kind of backdrop audiences prefer. Vanuatu is a string of 83 Pacific islands, 65 of them populated. It was called New Hebrides when James Michener was there, writing the stories that were adapted into the musical "South Pacific." "Will & Grace" season-opener, 7:40 p.m., NBC. During Debra Messing's pregnancy this show often leaned on big, splashy guest roles. Now Messing is back, and the gimmicks are gone. At the heart of tonight's 40-minute episode is the verbal play between the four stars. It's sometimes silly, sometimes overwrought, but often funny. There are still a couple key guests, though. One is Jennifer Lopez, returning from a tour with Jack as her dancer and new best friend. The other is Harry Connick Jr. as Leo, the husband who cheated on Grace (Messing). The second half of tonight's episode ranges from funny to dead-serious. Of note
"First Invasion: The War of 1812," 5, 9 p.m., History Channel. If you missed this terrific documentary Thursday, catch it now. It's a lush look at the War of 1812, one that the better-armed British could easily have won were it not for a few key events. "Joey," 7 p.m., NBC. Joey's nephew moves in, and now it's time for the uncle to teach the brainy young man some lessons about meeting women. Meanwhile, Joey also finds some surprises about his attractive neighbor. "The O.C.: Obsess Completely," 7 p.m., Fox. This slick show caught some people by surprise when it premiered 13 months ago. Now, before the second season begins, Fox pauses for a refresher on the characters and situations. "Jack & Bobby," 8 p.m., WB. Here's a second chance to see the wonderful pilot film featuring teen brothers, one of whom will be president. "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. After DNA evidence frees an apparent rapist, Grissom wonders if the evidence could be wrong. "The Apprentice," 8:20 p.m., NBC. In another expanded episode, the two teams try to outdo each other in selling ice cream. "Without a Trace," 9 p.m., CBS. A yacht is found with only the captain's body on board. A wealthy family is missing.
