Policy-making student's extracurricular focus

Twelve-year-old Christopher Millard has picked up a lot about parliamentary procedure after serving as the student member of Kaumana Elementary School's School-Community Based Management team and the Parent Teacher Association.
In April, he will travel to Washington, D.C., for the People to People World Leadership Forum. He'll earn school credit for the trip.
"I'm looking forward to improving my leadership skills, and I'm looking forward to being able to see the monuments," Christopher said.
Participants will take part in small-group discussion and exercises designed to let them experience how leaders develop strategies, make decisions, build consensus and foster change.
While he has yet to decide what he wants to do when he grows up, he does know that he wants to be in charge.
"I want to help make decisions," he said. "Sometimes you don't get to help make decisions or make your voice heard if you're not a leader."
Christopher got involved in the school's management board through his father, Donald Millard, who also was a member. From that experience, he learned parliamentary procedure and why problems at his school don't get fixed as quickly as he would like.
"There are other schools out there, and I guess I was being a little selfish," he said.
As the student representative to the PTA, he "really learned parliamentary procedure"
at a convention in Kona. While some workshops, such as financial basics, were over his head, "It was nice to be ... treated like an adult," he said.
He was forced to get organized when his responsibilities increased and he could no longer keep track of them in his head.
He is also active in the Boy Scouts and enjoys camping and hiking.
• Who helped you? "I was nominated by my sixth-grade teacher Dawn Palmerson (formerly Quiocho), but it's mostly been my parents, because they've been helping me along," Millard said. His parents helped keep him on schedule and sort through all the papers in his backpack.
• Do you have any advice for other kids who might want to follow your example? "If you want to get involved, try to run for the student government ... or talk to a teacher," he said.
And once you get involved, stay involved. "It is going to get hard juggling school work and other extracurricular activities, but just stick with it," he said.
