Irons loses heat, but still in meet
Advertiser Staff
Kaua'i's Andy Irons lost the battle as the Boost Mobile Pro of Surf began yesterday in Lower Trestles, Calif.
Irons, the two-time world champion and current ratings leader, finished third in the day's most stacked heat as incredible surfing action and intense battling for position played out in good 3- to 4-foot conditions.
Richard Lovett of Australia won the heat with 16.43 points, beating out highly touted California wildcard Dane Reynolds (15.96) and Irons (7.83).
"On paper it was always going to be a really hard heat, and in the water it proved the same," Lovett said. "We were all itching for more waves, and I was lucky to get a left towards the end. I knew all eyes would be on Andy out there, so I wasn't feeling any pressure at all."
Irons became involved in a couple of paddling tussles and ultimately lacked necessary points. He'll now face Reynolds in today's elimination round.
Jamie O'Brien placed second in his heat while fellow Hawai'i surfers Bruce Irons, Kalani Robb and Sunny Garcia all finished third in theirs.
