Sounds of the guitar

Singer/songwriter/slide guitarist Stefan George, with more than a dozen CDs of original music to his credit, gives a concert tonight with back-up vocalist Lavinia White. George, who began playing guitar at age 11, has toured both U.S. coasts and eight European countries. Slim Jr. offers an opening set. 'Woyzeck' at Dark Night

"Woyzeck," a tragic drama by Georg Buchner, presented by Pure Theatre (formerly Cruel Theatre) begins a run Monday as part of Kumu Kahua's Dark Night Series. The story of a soldier who earns a meager living to support his common-law wife and their child, it's based on a historical incident in which a Johann Christian Woyzeck was decapitated in 1824 for the murder of his mistress. Pure Theatre's artistic director Taurie Kinoshita directs. Show times are 8 p.m. Monday and Sept. 26-27 at the Kumu Kahua playhouse at 46 Merchant St. Tickets are $5. 536-4441.


Sasha in concert

Sasha, Ukrainian-born master of the seven-string guitar, offers a concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Doris Duke Theatre, Honolulu Academy of Arts. Born Alexander Lisnichuk, Sasha blends Latin flamenco with "Slavic soul" for a dynamic style that also incorporates Brazilian samba and American jazz. He will be joined by local percussionist Petro Bass and Brazilian percussionist Rafael Pereira. Tickets are $18 general, $15 museum members. 521-9699.


It's party time in Waikiki

Tonight's Aloha Festivals Waikiki Ho'olaule'a is a block party of food, fellowship and nonstop entertainment on eight stages on Kalakaua Avenue. Admission is free, but the purchase of a $5 Aloha Festivals ribbon is suggested.

More than 100,000 attendees are expected.

Kalakaua will close to motorists beginning at 5 p.m., reopening about midnight. Tow away zones beginning as early as 1 p.m. will be in effect on Kalakaua, Lewers Street, Kalia Road, and Seaside, 'Ohua and Paoakalani avenues.

Rocking for a fund-raiser

Those ever-aware folks of Unity Crayons are sponsoring a concert fund-raiser for Ladyfest Hawaii, a festival of music, performance and visual arts and workshops scheduled for March. The concert, from 7 to 11 p.m. today at Club Pauahi (86 Pauahi St.) will feature the Isle bands Black Square (right), Temporary Lovers, My Ex is Dead and Hell Caminos. Afterward, until 2 a.m., there's a dance party with Keoki, DJ Sleeze and others. It's an all-ages event. Admission is $5 (or more as a donation, if you so choose) at the door.

And Saturday night there's another Unity Crayons musical event, from 8 to 11 p.m. at Coffee Talk. Black Square, El Enemigo, Vax, Warren Li Young, Jake Foster, Josh86, Nick Danger and Myk give it their all at an all-ages show. Admission is $5; it's a fund-raiser for an "Underneath the 808" CD. 384-5706


An eye on the stage

Chris Doi is the Cyclops, Aito Steele is Selinus the satyr in "The Cyclops." Late Night Theatre at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa kicks off a new season with a one-eyed monster of a play in "The Cyclops," a comedy by the Greek playwright Euripides. "Cyclops" is directed by UHM student Ashley Larson and is suggested for mature audiences. Tickets are $8 general, $7 non-UH students, seniors, military, UH faculty/staff, $3 UH students. Show times are at 11 p.m. Saturday and Sept. 24-25; 8 p.m. Sunday at the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre, UH-Manoa. There's a post-show rap Sept. 24. 956-7655.


The legend of Maui

Right, Gerritt Vincent, a Kamehameha Schools junior, is the demi-god Maui, who lassoes the sun, portrayed by Mana Lolotai, left, also a junior. The two are featured in "E Maui E," a stage production about the legendary hero presented by the school's Kapalama Campus Performing Arts Department. The public is invited to free half-hour performances beginning at 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m. Sunday at the Princess Ruth Ke'elikolani Auditorium on campus. 842-8542.


It's all about women

Spirit, wellness and style are the catchwords at the 2nd annual Hawai'i Woman Expo this weekend at the Blaisdell Center. The event is jam-packed with speakers specializing in topics from health/medical issues to interior design, from networking to makeovers, from leadership to finances. More than 200 booths will offer services and products including fashions, jewelry, furniture, food and more. Other highlights:

  • Meet the stars of the Oxygen network's new redesign show, "Nice Package," at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the main stage; a Q&A session and autograph signing begin at 3:30 p.m.
