Symphony's MasterWorks season opens with famed violinist Lin

It's time for a little cultural fun as the Honolulu Symphony Halekulani MasterWorks season opens with renowned violinist Cho-Liang Lin, pictured. He has appeared as a guest artist with the Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic and orchestras in France, Sweden, Japan, China and Taiwan.

The program includes "Serenade" by Leonard Bernstein and "Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95" by Antonín Dvorák. Samuel Wong conducts. Tickets are $26, $38, $48, $56 and $69.

Join other heroes on Make A Difference Day

Circle Oct. 23 on your calendar. That's the annual Make A Difference Day, when we all get a good hit of do-good, help-people, save-the-planet, not-so-random acts of kindness.

It's early yet, so the USA Weekend Web site, makeadifferenceday.com, only has a handful of projects listed for the Islands. But you can log on to fill out the form, which then lets you connect and network with others interested in helping out on projects.

Make A Difference Day is an annual community service project effort sponsored by USA Weekend and the Points of Light Foundation. Winning projects net awards for nonprofit associations.
