69 Isle students in running for National Merit Scholarships

Advertiser Staff

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has named 69 Hawai'i students as semifinalists in the competition for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship Awards worth $33.9 million.

About 90 percent of the 16,000 semifinalists will advance to the finals, and approximately half the finalists will win scholarships. The winners will be announced in four news releases from April through July 2005.

Semifinalists are high school seniors who got the top 1 percent of scores in their state on the 2003 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Finalists must have a record of very high academic performance, SAT scores that confirm their qualifying tests, and endorsement and recommendation from their school principals. Winners will be selected for their accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
