'Olelo to feature BOE candidates

Tonight's live political debate on 'Olelo Community Television's Channel 54 features most of the candidates running for the three O'ahu at-large seats on the Board of Education.

The top six vote-getters in tomorrow's primary will move on to the general election and will return to debate on 'Olelo on Oct. 13.

Debating tonight will be Robert Barry, Darwin Ching, Albert Furuto, Guy Kaulukukui, Maralyn Kurshals, Marcia Linville, Nobleza Magsanoc, Alan Takumi, Garrett Toguchi, Marcia Wong, Shannon Wood and Arvid Youngquist.

Also on the ballot are Signe Godfrey, Cec Heftel, Lei Ahu Isa, Robert Midkiff, Ron Pohnel and Pam Lee Smith.

The debate will begin at 6:30 p.m. and has been extended to 90 minutes to accommodate the large number of candidates.



Debate to cover amendments

A panel of Hawai'i experts will debate the pros and cons of proposed amendments to Ha-

wai'i's state constitution in today's live broadcast of "You and the Law in Hawai'i."

"Constitutional Amendments: How Should You Vote?" will also answer viewers' questions regarding issues raised by the four constitutional amendments on Hawai'i's November ballot:

• The Sex Offender Registry Web site.

• Protection of communications between alleged sexual-assault victims and their counselors.

• The giving of additional authority to the Legislature regarding the definition of certain sex crimes.

• The "information charging controversy," which will allow felony charges to be initiated without existing constitutional safeguards.

Panelists will include Mark Bennett, state attorney general; Honolulu prosecuting attorney Peter Carlisle; deputy public defender Susan Arnett; and attorney Brook Hart.

"Constitutional Amendments: How Should You Vote?" will be broadcast live 6:30 to 8 p.m. today on 'Olelo Channel 55. 'Olelo will rebroadcast the show from 7:30 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
