Vercruyssen wins gold at Japan event

Hawai'i's Nani Vercruyssen won a gold medal in the highest category in the 32nd All-Japan Junior National Trampoline Championships in Kaminoyama City (Yamagata Prefecture) last month.

Vercruyssen, 12, was the only foreigner among 400 of Japan's top qualifying trampolinists in three categories: grades 1-3, 4-6, and 7-9. Vercruyssen competed in the 13-16 age group (grades 7-9).

Vercruyssen set a record for the most difficult routine performed in the 32-year history of the event. She scored a 33.3 with a routine that had a 11.3 degree of difficulty.



MOTOCROSS

Youth racing series set for Parker Ranch

The Hawai'i Racing Association is promoting a monthly motocross and all-terrain vehicle racing series for youths at the Parker Ranch rodeo arena at Waimea on the Big Island.

The yearlong "Keiki MX Series" is scheduled for Sept. 26, Oct. 17, Nov. 14, Dec. 12, Jan. 16, Feb. 20, March 20, April 17, May 22, June 19, July 17, Aug. 21.

The series is a fund-raiser for the proposed Kona Motorsport Park project.

BASKETBALL

Coaching clinic will be at Damien gymnasium

The Hawai'i Basketball Coaches' Clinic is scheduled for Sept. 25 at Damien Memorial High School gymnasium.

The clinic staff includes college coaches Jim Bolla (University of Hawai'i women), Bob Burke (UH men's assistant coach), J.D. Barnett (Hawai'i Pacific), Aaron Griess (Chaminade) and Howie Landa (UNLV).

Registration forms are available at all schools, PAL offices, city and county recreation sites and military bases.

FISHING

Isaacs, Walker win Big Island tournament

Captain Darrin Isaacs and angler Charlie Walker tagged-and-released a 508 1/2-pound blue marlin and won $39,600 in the 18th Big Island Marlin Tournament Aug. 20 to 22 in Kona.

Isaacs and Walker, fishing aboard Sundowner, were one of 22 teams competing for $86,900 in prize money.

Captain Bobby Dobson on the Game Boat and angler Preston Stofer II placed second ($16,930), tagging and releasing with a 508-pound marlin. Captain Lyle Yeck and angler Don Frederickson on High Flier placed third ($15,210) with their 457-pound blue marlin that was tagged and released.

The tournament is part of the Maui Jim Series. The series runs events from June through November.

During the tournament, anglers receive 200 points for each blue marlin that is tagged and released. Over three days of fishing, anglers tagged 14 blue marlin. Anglers who tagged a marlin but did not win cash were rewarded with a pair of Maui Jim Sunglasses.

To date, Maui Jim Series participants have shared a purse of over $400,000 and continue to compete for an invitation to the Series Championship in November. The next tournament in the Maui Jim Marlin Series is the Okoe Bay Rendezvous, Sept. 24 to 26.

The winner of the championship will receive a fishing trip to Tahiti. In the lead of the Maui Jim Series in the angler division is Andy Powers, followed by Preston Stofer II in second, and Pat Brian in third. In the lead for the boat division are the teams fishing on board Holo Holo, Game Boat, and Anxious, respectively.
