Kaua'i's Irons falls in Mobile Pro
Advertiser News Services
World champion Andy Irons of Kaua'i was eliminated from the Boost Mobile Pro of Surf yesterday at Lower Trestles, Calif.
Wildcard Dane Reynolds of California, pulled the upset in round two of the Foster's ASP World Championship Tournament in 4-foot conditions.
The 20-year-old Reynolds took the lead with his first 7.0 ride, before Irons, the ratings leader, answered with a 7.83 score.
Halfway though the heat, Reynolds earned an 8.5-point wave when he executed a series of fast, crisp backhand re-entries down the line.
Irons, meanwhile, waited an agonizing 20-minutes for another chance to perform. He finally got one in the final minute, but scored only a 6.77 when he needed a 7.68 to pass Reynolds.
"I have mix of emotions," said Reynolds. "Cause I'm a wildcard I've got nothing on the line and I sort of feel bad if I beat these guys, but I wasn't going to let him step over me. I happened to get the better waves out there and it kind of went flat for him, so luckily I came out on top."
Reynolds advances to today's third round where he takes on six-time world champion Kelly Slater of Florida.
