Omatsuri event Oct. 10 at shrine

The Izumo Taishakyo Mission of Hawaii, a Shinto shrine at 215 N. Kukui St., will hold its 98th annual Omatsuri (Thanksgiving Festival) at 2 p.m. Oct. 10.

A prayer service will be followed by free dinner and entertainment, including the dance groups Bando Ryo and the Nakasone Ryukyu Kenkyusho, drumming by the Hawaii Matsuri Taiko Group, and karaoke.

'Listening from 'the Heart' lecture

Genie Joseph will present a free lecture on "Listening from the Heart" at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Jodo Mission of Hawaii, 1429 Makiki St.

Joseph, a marriage and family counselor and communications specialist, will discuss ways to improve challenging relationships and bring greater compassion to all interactions.

Laughter for lightening spirit

The Fall 2004 Mackey Marianist lecture series will feature Annette Goodheart, a therapist who gives workshops in cathartic laughter and is a self-described motorcycle enthusiast, artist and author who spent 13- years living on her sailboat christened Tee-Hee.

Her free workshop, "Spirituality of Laughter: Laughter and the Lightness of Spirit," will be at 4 p.m. Oct. 24 at Mystical Rose Oratory on the Chaminade University of Honolulu, Saint Louis School campus, 3140 Wai'alae Ave. After the lecture, refreshments will be served.

Religious views on world peace

The Marianist Center of Hawaii and Chaminade University of Honolulu's Fujitani Lectures will present a panel of six women from different faiths discussing world peace.

The panel discussion will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 2 in the Mystical Rose Oratory on the campus of Chaminade University and Saint Louis School.

Panelists are Jolene Gerell of the United Methodist Church; Ha'aheo Guansom of the Hawaiian religion; Megan McKenna, a Catholic; Michelle Ouansafi, a Muslim; Alice Tucker of the Jewish faith; and Jan Youth, a Buddhist. The moderator is Diane Iwaoka, a nonreligion-affiliated humanist.

In the morning session, panelists will reflect on the book "Nonkilling Global Political Science," by Glenn D. Paige, and respond to the author's primary question, "Is a non-killing society possible?" After lunch, participants will meet in small groups.

The program is $10 ($15 at the door, free for Chaminade/Saint Louis students, faculty and staff), which includes coffee, tea, light refreshments and a vegetarian or non-vegetarian lunch. Register at www.marianisthawaii.org.
