Advertiser endorses in today's Primary vote

It's election day, folks. If you're registered, take time out today to get the polls and cast your vote.

The Advertiser focused its endorsements for today's primary on the races for Honolulu mayor, prosecuting attorney, state Board of Education and two legislative districts with unusual circumstances.

We plan additional endorsements before the General Election. Meanwhile, in today's Primary, we recommend:

For mayor of Honolulu: Mufi Hannemann, who we believe has the right combination of experience, vision, political sophistication and abiding love of the city.

For Honolulu prosecuting attorney: Incumbent Peter Carlisle has done a solid job and has a keen awareness of the delicate balance between tough law enforcement and long-term crime prevention.

For School Board: Kauai: Mitsugi Nakashima and Maggie Cox. Big Island: Herbert Watanabe. Honolulu: Denise Matsumoto. O'ahu at large: Guy Kaulukukui, Maralyn Kurshals, Nobleza Magsanoc, Robert Midkiff, Alan Takumi and Garrett Toguchi.

We also called attention to two legislative races. In the 42nd House District (Waipahu, Honouliuli, 'Ewa) we endorse Rida Cabanilla. Incumbent Tulsi Tamayo is on the ballot but would not be able to serve because she is on active military duty.

In the 18th Senate District (Waipahu, Crestview, Pearl City) the race will be decided in the primary since there are no other candidates. We endorse Clarence Nishihara.
