Kahuku races past Farrington in OIA East

Bad news for the four remaining O'ahu Interscholastic Association football teams on Kahuku's schedule: The Red Raiders looked even better last night than they did in last month's 37-17 rout of Saint Louis.
Eugene Tanner The Honolulu Advertiser
Kahuku, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, cruised past Farrington, 41-0, before 3,001 rain-soaked fans at Aloha Stadium.
Farrington defensive back Greg Simion attempts to catch Kahuku receiver Devin Unga, who is on his way to a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The Red Raiders led 14-0 after one quarter and 34-0 at the half in improving to 4-1 overall, 3-0 in the OIA's Red Conference Eastern Division. Farrington fell to 1-3, 1-1.
Kahuku's talent level has never been questioned since practice started on Aug. 2, but the Red Raiders' ability to hold onto the football was. They fumbled nine times each against Skyline of Salt Lake City (in a 27-8 loss) and Saint Louis, losing eight and six fumbles, respectively.
But last night, Kahuku fumbled only once (lost), and that came late in the first half with the score already 34-0.
"We've been doing a lot of drills in practice, trying to protect the ball, hold onto the ball," said Red Raiders running back Micah Strickland, who had 92 yards on three carries (no fumbles) last night.
Kahuku also threw the ball 13 times without an interception.
"With us, it always depends on which team shows up," Red Raiders coach Siuaki Livai said. "Sometimes, we average 10 turnovers and if we have an ugly night like that, we could lose."
Last night's performance was ugly only for Farrington, which recently returned 18 of 20 players from academic probation but also lost starting linebacker and team captain Fetaiagogo Fonoti to a fractured fibula. Governors coach Randall Okimoto said Fonoti, who did not suit up last night, is expected to be out another four weeks.
"It affects our whole team," said Okimoto, who added that Fonoti is his starting punter.
Kahuku struck early and often with big plays, starting with Malosi Te'o's 71-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. On the next series, Te'o added a 32-yard TD scamper to help put the Red Raiders up 14-0.
Strickland then dashed 77 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter, and quarterback Bronson Ponciano-Ahue connected on a 5-yard TD pass to tight end Viliami Tilini to make it 28-0 with 9:12 remaining in the half.
"Once we got that lead, I wasn't too concerned about winning or losing," Livai said. "I was paying more attention to our execution fumbles and missed assignments, things like that."
He liked what he saw, but opponents probably won't when they watch the film.
"They didn't make too many mistakes," Okimoto said. "I was impressed."
