Memorial service today for ranger

Associated Press

WAILUKU, Maui — A memorial service is scheduled today for the National Park Service ranger who was killed when a boulder fell and struck her as she was trying to remove rocks from a road in Haleakala National Park.

The service for Suzanne E. Roberts, 36, will be held at Hamoa Beach in Hana, officials said.

Roberts was struck Tuesday by a boulder more than 3 feet in diameter. She was trying to clear rocks that had fallen on a highway on the island's east side, officials said.

She had worked at the Maui park since April, having transferred from Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.
