Mililani to hear advice on safety

Representatives from the Honolulu Police Department, state attorney general's office, FBI and Mililani Town Association will present information for families about pedestrian, bicycle, personal and Internet safety Thursday at Mililani 'Ike Elementary School.
The "Be Safe" presentation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the school, 95-1330 Lehiwa Drive, and will include activities and crafts.
Families are invited to participate in a "Safety Night" walk and bike ride on Friday.

The state Civil Defense has added disaster preparation information on its Web site to assist people with disabilities: www.scd.hawaii.gov. Under "special needs information," there is a checklist for people with special needs that can be downloaded and printed. The checklist covers topics such as reducing hazards in the home, preparing a disaster kit, fire safety and evacuations. The checklist was prepared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and American Red Cross.

Immediate concession fund-raising opportunities are available at Aloha Stadium. All concessions are staffed by nonprofit groups during Friday and Saturday night football games played at the stadium in exchange for 10 percent of the net sales.
Qualifying requirements are a 501-C3 nonprofit ID number and a minimum group size of 20 people ages 18 or older to staff Aloha Stadium concession locations during Friday night OIA/ILH high school football and Saturday night University of Hawai'i Warriors football games.
According to Lois Sismar, Hawai'i regional vice president of Centerplate, a local food and concession service company, groups that can schedule two volunteer managers and a crew of 18 workers for nine- to 10-hour shifts during football games are eligible. Anyone interested in this fund-raising opportunity may contact Aloha Stadium general manager Ella Gonzalez at 488-0924.
A public auction of property forfeited to the state of Hawai'i will be held Saturday at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.
The property to be sold includes a 2002 Ford F150 Harley-Davidson Edition Crew Cab, a 1997 American Eagle custom motorcycle, a 2000 Kawasaki KX 250 competition motocross bike, 1998 Dodge Caravan, a 1995 Dodge Neon, a 1993 Toyota 4Runner, a 1993 Toyota pickup, other vehicles, stereo equipment, tools, jewelry and other property.
A complete list of items to be auctioned is available at www.state.hi.us/ag. The property to be sold may be inspected starting at 11 a.m. The auction will begin at noon.
The auction is the result of efforts by state and county law-enforcement agencies to fight crime by seizing and forfeiting assets used or acquired in connection with criminal activities. Proceeds from the auction will be used by state and county law-enforcement agencies to combat crime.
Employees and immediate family members of county police departments, prosecuting attorneys' offices and the Department of the Attorney General are not eligible to purchase forfeited property.
Derek Chow, senior projects manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will give a presentation Wednesday on plans to improve the health of the Ala Wai watershed and protect Waikiki and surrounding areas from a 100-year flood.
The presentation will be at 10 a.m. at the Waikiki Community Center, 310 Paokalani Ave.
Chow will discuss the projects' benefits, issues and costs, estimated to be about $60 million. Construction could begin in 2008.

A free children's story time program will be presented at the Hawai'i State Library's Edna Allyn Room for Children at 10:30 a.m. every Saturday through December except holidays.
The program is designed for children of all ages and will be conducted by staff librarians.
Children must be accompanied by an adult, but registration is not required.

LIHU'E, Kaua'i Visitors and residents to the Garden Island can keep track of activities and special events on the island at a new Web site, www.kauaifestivals.com, which is co-sponsored by the Kaua'i Visitors Bureau and the County of Kaua'i. "In the past, visitors often came and went without knowing the wealth of cultural and event opportunities available to them during their stay," said Nalani Brun, tourism specialist with the county's Office of Economic Development.
She said the Web site allows organizers to upload information and graphics on their events.
