HOUSTON — Scoring two touchdowns in the return to his hometown was something University of Hawai'i running back Michael Brewster dreamed of.

Losing the game wasn't.

"I wish one of them could have been the game-winner," Brewster said after Rice University rallied for 13 fourth-quarter points and a 41-29 victory. "That's how I would have liked it."

Brewster, who grew up in Houston and graduated from Nimitz High School, 30 minutes away from Rice Stadium, said he had, "about 40 family and friends at the game."

And until what became a bitter end for the 0-2 Warriors, he gave them quite a show, catching a six-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tim Chang in the first quarter for the first score of the game. He added a TD on a 31-yard pass from Chang on the final play of the third quarter to give the Warriors their last lead, 29-28.

Brewster had 31 yards on six carries and caught seven passes for 59 yards.

"But I came here for a win," Brewster said. "The individual stuff is nice, but I wanted that win. That would have made it a success."

Still, on top of a two-touchdown performance in the season opener, it has been quite a start for the senior who came to UH via the University of Tennessee.

"Brew is a player, a real competitor and just a great kid and a great player," head coach June Jones said.

Said assistant coach Vantz Singletary: "Brewster is probably the MVP of this team right now, if you ask me. He's tried to carry us. My hat is off to him."
