Waialua breaks through for first win

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Alvin Foster rushed for 144 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries and Brandon Repollo added 113 yards rushing on 22 carries last night to lead the Waialua High School football team to its first victory of the season, 23-13, over visiting Kalani.

Waialua improved to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's White Conference. Kalani fell to 1-4, 0-4.

Kalani played without starting quarterback Preston Pires, who tore a medial collateral ligament in his knee last week and is out for the season.

Waialua took a 6-0 lead midway through the second quarter on Foster's 9-yard run, but Kalani later went up 7-6 after Dusten Umeda's zig-zag 64-yard punt return. The Bulldogs grabbed the lead back at 9-7 early in the third quarter on Diego Reverberi's 32-yard field goal.

Jerrold McNulty returned a Falcons fumble 44 yards for a touchdown to help put the Bulldogs up 16-7 with 10:29 remaining in the game.

The Bulldogs made it 23-7 with 2:56 left on Justin Mangallan's 15-yard scamper down the left side, but Kalani answered with Umeda's 72-yard catch-and-run down the right sideline on a pass from Richard Akau. However, Akau's two-point conversion pass attempt failed and Waialua recovered the ensuing onside kick.
