Seasiders' Smith races to third straight win

Brigham Young-Hawai'i junior Chelsea Smith won the Big Wave Invitational yesterday, her third victory in as many races this season.

Smith completed the 4K race at Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course in 14:37. Hawai'i-Manoa's Dana Buchanan finished second (15:18).

Hawai'i-Manoa won the seven-team women's division with 37 points. BYU-Hawai'i (49) was second and Houston (93) third.

In the men's 5K race, Sesar Figueroa (16:04) and Ty Stanfield (16:06) led a 1-2 finish for Houston, which also won the team title.

The Cougars finished with 33 points, followed by Pomona-Pitzer (59) and Hawai'i-Hilo (96).



KARATE

'Aiea boy claims gold at Junior Pan-Ams

'Aiea's Bradley Nishibata became the first athlete from Hawai'i to win a gold medal at the Junior Pan-American Karate Championships earlier this month at Santiago, Chile.

Nishibata, 15, also was the only American male to win gold at the tournament, which featured around 20 countries from North, South and Central America.



GOLF

Fujikawa leads after 1st round of Mayor's Cup

Tadd Fujikawa shot a four-under-par 66 to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Mayor's Cup yesterday at Ala Wai Golf Course.

Mark Chun is second and Keith Kishimoto is third at 69.

The final round is today.



WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

Chaminade sweeps BYUH in PacWest

Kahala Kabalis had 18 kills and Valasi Sepulona added 11 kills and three aces as Chaminade (7-2, 2-0) swept No. 24 Brigham Young-Hawai'i (6-4, 0-2) in a Pacific West Conference match last night at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie. The scores were 30-22, 30-27, 30-27.

HPU sweeps Hilo: Barbara Martin had 11 kills as No. 10 Hawai'i Pacific (8-1, 2-0) swept Hawai'i-Hilo (3-8, 0-2) in a Pacific West Conference match last night at Hilo civic. The scores were 30-22, 30-18, 30-22.



SEMINAR

Author Wire to speak on college recruiting

Rick Wire, author of The Student-Athlete and College Recruiting program, is scheduled to give a free presentation at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at Kapolei High School Gym.

The presentation will explain why academics have a major impact on college recruiting; how to honestly and realistically evaluate a child's talent level; physical and mental preparation for college athletics; three options of marketing student-athletes to college coaches; and how to get involved in the recruiting process.
