Name: Greg Howell

Age: 50

Profession: "I was an actor and dancer in my youth, and, thanks to our great community theaters, I still get the chance to do that now and then. I was also a potter and sculptor for a few years on Maui. But none of these things quite pay the bills. So for almost 30 years ...I have been a makeup artist and hair stylist."

Height: 5'9"

Weight: 165 lb.

Workout habits: "I work out four days a week at 24 Hour Fitness. I do weight training with a combination of free weights and machines."

The feeling that accompanies a workout is why Greg Howell makes fitness a priority. Working out lets him feel more alive and aware.

When and why I started working out: "About four years ago. I was feeling tired and old and unable. Around the same time, my brother had a quadruple bypass heart surgery, and that really woke me up. It was time for me to stop making excuses."

My good foods/bad foods: "I am originally from the Deep South and that means deep-fried everything. Fortunately, I also like a lot of healthy foods, fruits and vegetables and chicken."

My biggest motivator: "I love the way I feel after a really good workout — like I'm a little more alive and aware. I even like the soreness a day or two after. It lets me know I didn't waste my time at the gym. Most of all I like having people guess my age as somewhat less than 50."

My biggest roadblock to fitness: "Not enough time! I have to make workouts a priority and at the top of the list every day; otherwise, any one of a dozen other interests will edge it out."

What saves my sanity: "Good friends ... and the fact that I really enjoy my clients and the people I work with."

My next challenge: "Great six pack abs before my next birthday!"

Advice for those in the same boat: "Get off your butt and move. And if you decide to head for the gym, it really makes a difference to hire a professional trainer and get the right start. Like the ad says, just do it!"
