Rotich, Wokasch win Maui Marathon

Jacob Rotich, of Searcy, Ark., won the 34th Annual Maui Marathon yesterday, completing the 26.2-mile race in 2 hours, 28 minutes, 14 seconds.

Greg Wenneborg finished second in 2:34:28 and Kota Kiriyama took third in 2:40:15.

Jeannie Wokasch was the first female finisher, placing 21st overall in 3:11:37. Peggy Nelson-Panzer finished second in 3:19:29 and Mary Cote was third in 3:21:40.

Randy Caddell was the lone wheelchair entrant, finishing in 1:53:49.

Matthew Holton, of Flagstaff, Ariz., won the half-marathon in 1:09:10. He was followed by Pete Chenard (1:12:22) and Matt Mosman (1:12:54).

Lahaina's Shelley Snyder was the first female finisher in the half-marathon, placing 32nd overall in 1:37:05. Motoe Ooshiro was second in 1:37:56 and Marie Janiszewski took third in 1:44:20.

Rotich also won the Maui Tacos 5K on Saturday in 15:07. Kira Jorgensen, of Seabrook, Texas, was the first female finisher, placing fourth in 18:29.



GOLF

Chun captures 25th Mayor's Cup

Mark Chun shot a 1-over-par 71 yesterday to capture the 25th Annual Mayor's Cup Tournament at the Ala Wai Golf Course.

Chun, who continued his remarkable comeback from a stroke he suffered nearly five years ago, finished the two-day tournament with a 1-under 139 for a two-stroke victory.

Tadd Fujikawa (75) and Keith Kishimoto (72) tied for second at 141.

Kelvin Sato (74) and Stanford Inouye (74) shared A flight honors at 145. Edward Jones won B flight with 76—147, and Malcolm Ahlo (83) and Glenn Hasebe (82) tied for C flight honors at 164.

Mari Chun won the Ladies Flight with 71—142.



VOLLEYBALL

California sweeps past UC Irvine in final

Angie Pressey had 18 kills as No. 14 California defeated UC Irvine, 30-24, 30-23, 30-27, yesterday in the final match of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Invitational at Stan Sheriff Center.

Alicia Powers added 11 kills for Cal, which improved to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the tournament. Whitney Pavlik had 14 kills for UC Irvine (7-2, 0-2).



MEETING

Cavanaugh, Singletary to speak at QB Club

University of Hawai'i football assistant coaches Mike Cavanaugh and Vantz Singletary are scheduled to speak at today's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., with the program to follow.
