Pipe break snarls Kapi'olani traffic

A water main break that snarled Kapi'olani Boulevard traffic yesterday kept eastbound lanes closed through about midday today as road crews resurfaced the roadway, between Ke'eaumoku and Kaheka streets.

The break occurred in a 12-inch main near the Kaheka intersection about 10:51 a.m. yesterday, said Wanda Yamane, spokeswoman for the Honolulu Board of Water Supply. Crews finished repairs and cleanup about 2:30 a.m. today, Yamane said, and contractors arrived later in the morning to begin resurfacing, expected to take until midday.

Eastbound traffic is being diverted at Ke'eaumoku Street; two westbound lanes will remain open.

Kapi'olani traffic already has been restricted because sewer line repairs in the roadway center closed one of the three lanes in either direction, Yamane said.
