Man, 22, arrested in car theft

A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of car theft yesterday morning after he ran a red light in front of a police officer.

The officer was at the intersection of Pi'ikoi and Kina'u streets at about 5:30 a.m. and saw the car go through a red light, police said.

The officer followed the car, ran a check on the license plates and found the car had been reported stolen by a 43-year-old Honolulu woman.

The suspected car thief tried to speed away, then abandoned the car on Stillman Lane in lower Nu'uanu, and ran away.

Police searched the area and found the man, who was arrested for car theft.


Charges filed over drug-filled stereo

A Honolulu woman has been charged in federal court with trying to possess about three pounds of methamphetamine found hidden in a stereo system in a package shipped here last week from Oakland.

Jacqueline Silveyra admitted that she had been paid $1,000 to receive the package and that she knew it contained illegal drugs, according to a police affidavit filed in support of the charges.

Silveyra was arrested after she arrived at the Airborne Express office to pick up the package, the affidavit said.


Nanakuli fire burns 10 acres

A brushfire scorched 10 acres in Nanakuli yesterday before firefighters got it under control at about 4:39 p.m.

The fire was reported near the 87-1200 block of Hakimo Road at 3:59 p.m. Firefighters declared the blaze under control 40 minutes later.
