FAIRBANKS RANCH, Calif. — San Diego County sheriff's officials have opened an investigation into attempted murder against a Hawai'i woman who was arrested after another Hawai'i woman was shot at a home in this gated community.

Tammy Cappel, 44, was jailed without bail on suspicion of one count of attempted murder after the shooting Thursday, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Jan D. Valdez, 71, was in stable condition at at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, the newspaper reported. She was shot multiple times.

Detective John Williamson said Valdez is not a permanent resident of Fairbanks Ranch. Property records show her mailing address in Portlock, O'ahu.

Cappel may have worked for Valdez, possibly as a caretaker, police told the San Diego newspaper. Cappel was arrested at the home on Circa Del Norte.

Deputies responding to a 911 hang-up call at the address found Valdez with numerous gunshot wounds, said sheriff's Sgt. Ron Morse. She was airlifted to Scripps La Jolla.
