MICHELLE WIE

Punahou School sophomore Michelle Wie will play in this week's 31st annual Waikoloa Open on the Big Island, organizers announced yesterday.

The tournament begins Friday at 6:30 a.m. and continues through Sunday. Spectators are welcome.

Wie, 14, will compete in the championship flight. This year's field has more than 200 players, one of the largest ever for a Waikoloa Open.

Defending champion John Hearn, head professional at The Reserve Golf Club in Indian Wells, Calif., is entered, as well as Dick McClean, the 2004 Senior Professional division winner.

Wie has played on the Big Island before, but never at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course.

The course is not available for open play during the tournament. For more information, call (808) 883-9621.
