Bettis captures women's triathlon

Tanya Bettis, a 34-year-old nurse at the Queen's Medical Center, won the Na Wahine Sprint Triathlon Sunday in Waikiki.

Bettis completed the 500-meter swim, 12-mile bike ride and 5-kilometer run in 1 hour, 4 minutes, 31 seconds.

Bettis was 12th after the swim off Queen's Beach, but took command with a strong bike ride around Diamond Head and through the Kahala area before finishing the run portion around Kapiolani Park.

Katherine Nichols finished second in 1:07:08, followed by Marion Summerer in 1:07:35.

The individual age group winners were: Leah Schretenthaler (14-19, 1:24:13), Kim Hill (20-24, 1:15:26), Janell Petalver (25-29, 1:13:43), Jennifer Burtner (30-34, 1:13:43), Melanie Koehl (35-39, 1:18:34), Gail Hamada (40-44, 1:19:21), Rachelle Jensen (45-49, 1:27:17), Lorna Erisman (50-54, 1:22:46), Sharon Meindertsma (55-59, 1:34:21), Kathleen Quinn (60-64, 1:31:52) and Joy Schoenecker (65-90, 1:43:29).

Jaime Jarrell won the military division in 1:13:25, while Jane McCarthy, Sally Hall, Peggy Crowell won the team competition in 1:25:40.



VOLLEYBALL

Chaminade's Kabalis earns PacWest honor

Chaminade women's volleyball player Kahala Kabalis was named Pacific West Conference Player of the Week for leading the Silverswords to two conference victories last week.

In wins over Hawai'i-Hilo and former No. 24 Brigham Young-Hawai'i, Kabalis averaged 5.43 kills and 4.29 digs per game as Chaminade improved to 7-2 overall, and 2-0 in the PacWest.

The senior outside hitter, a 2001 Moanalua graduate, had 20 kills and 24 digs against Hilo, and 18 kills and six digs against BYUH.

Kabalis ranks third in the conference at 4.56 kills per game. She led the conference in kills per game last season at 4.77.



SURFING

Irons keeps No. 1 world ranking

Kaua'i's Andy Irons retained his No. 1 ranking on the 2004 World Championship Tour despite not surfing during the final day of the Boost Mobile Pro yesterday at Lower Trestles, Calif.

Australia's Joel Parkinson defeated Florida's Kelly Slater to win the Boost Mobile Pro, which was completed in 6- to 8-foot waves.

Irons, the two-time defending world champion, was eliminated in the second round last week.

Through seven of 11 contests on the tour, Irons has 6,036 points. C.J. Hobgood of Florida is No. 2 with 5,376, and Slater is No. 3 with 5,316.

The next contest is scheduled to begin this weekend in France.



PARALYMPICS

Kane'ohe's Greer loses tennis match

John Greer of Kane'ohe lost his first-round singles wheelchair tennis match Sunday at the 12th Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Lahcen Majdi beat Greer, 6-2, 7-5, in 1 hour, 14 minutes at the Olympic Tennis Center.

Greer trailed 4-0 in the second set, before rallying to tie the score at 4-4 and 5-5. Majdi held serve, then broke Greer in the 12th game.

Four thousand-plus athletes from more than 100 countries are participating in the games, including 112 from 33 countries in wheelchair tennis, at the same sites where the Summer Olympics were held.



SOCCER

Barry to host goalkeeper clinic

Former Iolani boys varsity soccer coach Bob Barry is hosting a goalkeeper clinic designed specifically for boys and girls who want to play in high school.

The Bob Barry High School Goalkeeper Training Program is Oct. 9 to 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mililani High School. The clinic is open to players 13 and older, and costs $150.

Goalkeepers will work on technical and tactical aspects of the sport, including reading the game, angle play, distribution, diving, boxing and catching.

CYCLING

Diabetes fund-raising event set for Nov. 14

The Tour de Cure bicycle event, a fund-raiser for the American Diabetes Association's Hawai'i office, will be held Nov. 14 at Kapi'olani Park.

Bike riders of all ages and skill levels are invited to attend for a $35 registration fee.

Emphasized as a ride and not a race, the event offers cyclists a choice of two routes: a 25K route that runs through Hawai'i Kai, and a more difficult 50K that travels to Waimanalo and back. A 75K route, which combines the two, is also offered.

Participants who raise $50 or more receive an official T-shirt, and qualify for prize giveaways. Register online at www.diabetes.org/tour or by calling the ADA at 947-5979.

Gill triumphs in Maui Tour play

Robert Gill shot even-par 72 Sunday for a two-stroke victory in a Maui Tour event at the Wailea Gold Course.

Jim Olsen, Eddie Lee and Mike Schwanbenland each shot 74.

Senior professionals Olsen and Clif Council took team honors with 70.
