• "The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi": Takeshi Kitano, Japan's most intriguing contemporary actor-director, steps into the shoes of Zatoichi, a blind swordsman who was the subject in one of the most popular movies series in Japanese history. Opens tomorrow at Varsity Twin. (R) • "Criminal": A veteran con man (John C. Reilly) takes a kid (Diego Luna) under his arm, promising to train him as a partner. A remake of "Nine Queens," a 2002 Argentine film. Opens tomorrow at Kahala 8-Plex. (R) • "First Daughter": Katie Holmes stars as the daughter of the U.S. president (Michael Keaton). She insists on going to college without secret service agents in tow, but her dad assigns one anyway.
