Higa wins world handboarding meet

Claude Higa took top honors at the Redwings Memorial World Championships handboarding contest last weekend at Point Panic, O'ahu.

Higa won the open division and the grand championship heat.

Steve Kapela won the paepo boarding division and placed second to Higa in the grand championship final.



PARALYMPICS

Greer, Welch advance in wheelchair tennis

Kane'ohe's John Greer and partner Steve Welch beat France's Laurent Fischer and Regis Harel, 6-1, 6-3, yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals in wheelchair tennis at the 12th Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Greer and Welch, the fourth-seeded team, will play No. 6 seeds Anthony Bonaccurso and David Hall of Australia in the quarterfinals.

Welch, seeded No. 4, also reached the singles quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Bonaccurso.



Men's water polo

No. 14 BYUH defeats Chaminade, 18-4

Vanja Kalabic scored a match-high five goals and 10 teammates added at least one goal as 14th-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated visiting Chaminade, 18-4, in a men's water polo match yesterday.

Kalabic, a three-time All-American, scored three goals in the first four minutes for a 3-0 lead. Chaminade's Milos Matijevic responded with a goal and the Silverswords trailed 4-1 entering the second period.

BYUH erupted with runs of 6-0, 5-0 and 3-0 to put the match out of reach. Matijevic led Chaminade with three goals. BYUH's Dutch Turley scored three goals and Carlos Acevedo two.

The Seasiders improved to 5-1. The Silverswords dropped to 0-3.

BYUH hosts the Hawaiian Masters in an exhibition match at 2 p.m. tomorrow. The Hawaiian Masters will play another match against Chaminade at 4 p.m.



KITEBOARDING

World's best take to the air on Maui

The world's top kiteboarders will compete in the $26,000 Red Bull King of the Air event today through Saturday at Ho'okipa Beach on Maui's north shore.

Qualifying for this event was held in such places as Mexico, Italy, New Zealand and Belgium to allow for worldwide participation.

Kiters will compete in two categories: freestyle and hangtime.

Freestyle covers height, distance, maneuvers, technical tricks and making best use of waves.

The object of hangtime is to achieve the longest period of time in the air for any one jump. Last year's hangtime winner, Marcus "Flash" Austin, was airborne for 7.29 seconds. The women's hangtime winner, Julie Gilbert, was aloft for 5.1 seconds.



MARTIAL ARTS

Hilo's Verissimo on Ultimate card

Renato Verissimo of Hilo will make his third appearance in an Ultimate Fighting Championship event when he faces Frank Trigg of El Segundo, Calif., in a welterweight bout on Oct. 22 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

Ultimate fighting consists of the use of various martial arts, including jiu-jitsu, judo, karate, boxing, kickboxing and wrestling.

Verissimo, 31, is 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the UCF. He is the former trainer and coach of ultimate fighter BJ Penn, also of Hilo. Trigg is 11-2-0.

The event is scheduled to be shown on pay-per-view TV.
