CONCERTS: Oct. 1-2
Two of Hawai'i's favorite musical acts Kalapana and Yvonne Elliman will join the Honolulu Symphony in a pair of pops concerts. Kalapana, with hits such as "Naturally," "The Hurt," "You Make It Hard," "Nightbird" and "When the Morning Comes," is celebrating its 30th year together. Elliman, whose stage and film fame was forever sealed when she starred as Mary Magdalene in "Jesus Christ Superstar," is also known for the disco-era hit "If I Can't Have You." Emil de Cou is guest conductor. Tickets are $25-$70.

STAGE: Oct. 8-Nov. 7
Tickets are on sale now for "Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," directed by Ron Bright. The musical, based on the Mark Twain novel, with a Tony award-winning score by Roger Miller, is the tale of Huck (Sean Jones) and the slave Jim (John Bryan), who travel down the Mississippi River. Tickets are $26 general, $22 seniors 62 and older and military, $18 children and students; group rates available.

STAGE: Oct. 8-9
The stunning Bangarra Dance Theatre returns to Hawai'i for two electrifying international contemporary dance shows. Hailing from Australia and under the artistic direction of Stephen Page, the main event of the program is the enchanting new piece, "Bush." General admission is $22, $28, $32 and $38; it's $18, $22 and $26 for children, seniors, students and military.

SHOW: Oct. 9-10
The majestic Blue Angels come soaring into town to perform at the 2004 Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Navy Air Show. The Navy's Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron has consistently earned oohs and ahhs while performing its aviation acts around the world. The agility of the planes will be demonstrated with the aerobatic maneuvers of the four-plane diamond formation and the precision flying techniques of the six-jet delta formation. Admission is free.

FESTIVAL: Oct. 9
Learn all about Mo'ili'ili at the annual "Discover Mo'ili'ili Festival," which features a Country Store filled with homemade jellies, chutney, pickles and preserves; handicrafts by seniors at the Mo'ili'ili Community Center; crafts; a farmers' market; a history booth; kids' activities; food; and entertainment. The Ghost Storytelling Contest: A Tribute to Glen Grant begins at 6 p.m. at the Church of the Crossroads (admission is $3 general, $1 kids under 12). Admission to the festival is free.

CONCERT: Oct. 11
Los Lobos, one of America's premiere rock bands, comes to the Islands for a series of concerts, ending Oct. 11 at Pipeline Cafe in Honolulu. The band's latest release, "The Ride," marks the group's 30th anniversary together. It began as a Los Angeles garage band and has risen to international acclaim. Here's the schedule:

FESTIVAL: Oct. 15-17
Get ready to gab as the Department of Parks and Recreation presents the 16th annual Talk Story Festival. The first night of the storytelling celebration follows the theme "Spooky Stories." The second night offers "Love Stories"; "Tales of Courage" rule the last night. Local storytellers taking part include Ed Chevy, Alton Chung, Nyla Fujii-Babb, Kealoha (right), Selah, Deb Foy, Gordon Freitas, Dan Kelin, Makia Malo, Sandra MacLees and Tita. Jim Weiss comes in from the Mainland, and Jeff Gere hosts. Free.

The 2004-2005 season promises to be a golden one for the Honolulu Chamber Music Series, as more world-class chamber music comes pouring in for its 50th anniversary. The season starts off with the distinguished sounds of the Tokyo String Quartet, featuring, from left, Kazuhide Isomura on viola, Martin Beaver on violin, Clive Greensmith on cello, and Kikuei Ikeda on violin. Tickets are $24 general; $15 students and Honolulu Symphony musicians.

The highly anticipated Hawaii International Film Festival gears up for another big year with more award-winning films brought in from around the world. Highlights this year include "Arakimentari" from Japan, a documentary on Tokyo photographer Nobuyoshi Araki; "Cuba Libre" from Cuba, a look at the last year of the Batista regime; and "Jasmine Women" from China, featuring Zhang Ziyi of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" fame. RACE/WALK: Oct. 24
On your mark, get set, go! The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure gets ready to take off in its 10th year, to help increase breast cancer awareness and raise funds for breast cancer screening, treatment and education. Honolulu will be one of 100 cities across the U.S. that day taking part in this mission, which includes a 5K race and 1-mile fun walk/run. Individual entry fees range from $22 to $30.

Crayons benefit
Unity Crayons is sponsoring a multi-genre musical fund-raiser for the Domestic Violence Clearinghouse. It's an all-ages show, intended for the whole family. Among the performers are Ceschi Ramos, a hip-hop artist from Los Angeles; local hip-hop group No Master Backs; punkers El Enemigo; reggae band Cornerstone Rockers; ska/core band Black Square; and heavy-metal artists Buddhist Priest. It happens 6-10 p.m. Oct. 2 at McCoy Pavilion. $5 donation.
Musical memory lane
Ambrosia, John Ford Coley, Terry Sylvester (former lead singer of the The Hollies), Hawai'i's own Pauline Wilson and special guest J Michaels will return to those hit-making '70s and '80s in a concert at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Waikiki Shell. Ambrosia is known for hits including "How Much I Feel" and "You're the Only Woman." Coley, formerly of the duo England Dan and John Ford Coley, is part of hits such as "Love is the Answer" and "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight."
