Jefferson Awards nominations sought

Advertiser Staff

Nominations are being accepted for the national Jefferson Awards, which recognize everyday heroes who have made a difference through volunteerism.

Nominations from the public will be accepted through Oct. 20 and the final five recipients will be recognized during ceremonies on Nov. 19.

Those wishing to make a nomination are asked to write two paragraphs, 250 words or less, about the outstanding efforts the hero has made and how those actions have helped the community.

Five outstanding recipients will be selected, along with one who will represent Hawai'i at the national Jefferson Awards ceremonies in Washington, D.C. Judges include Christine Camp Friedman, chairwoman of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i and president of Avalon Development; Mayor Jeremy Harris; Irving Lauber, president of Aloha United Way; Carole Kai, local entertainer and founder of "Carole Kai Charities"; and Frank Boas, last year's Hawai'i representative.

Nomination forms are available at the front desk of The Honolulu Advertiser, or on the newspaper's Web site at www.honoluluadvertiser.com.

Completed forms may be faxed to 525-8198, mailed to The Jefferson Awards, c/o The Honolulu Advertiser, 605 Kapi'olani Boulevard, Honolulu, HI 96813, or dropped off at the front desk.

Founded by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, U.S. Sen. Robert Taft Jr. and Sam Beard, the Jefferson Awards give national recognition to unsung heroes from communities across the nation with the purpose of encouraging others to follow their lead.
