Knights hold off Farrington, improve to 4-0 in conference

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Castle outlasted Farrington, 34-19, at Aloha Stadium last night in a meeting of two O'ahu Interscholastic Association squads fighting through a tough season.

Eric Fagalele of Farrington, below, lays a hit on Castle's Victor Clore, who fumbled, in the first quarter. Castle's Lihikai Domingo recovered the ball and ran for a touchdown.

Castle, ranked No. 7 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 5-1 overall, 4-0 in the OIA's Red Conference Eastern Division. Farrington fell to 1-4, 1-2.

The teams, despite very different records, are similar in having to work through major setbacks. Castle lost its starting quarterback, Bryce Kalauoka'aea, for the season when he tore an anterior cruciate ligament in his knee four weeks ago. The Knights then lost all-state linebacker Blaze Soares to a strained knee two weeks ago. Soares is expected to miss next week's game against No. 1 Kahuku.

Farrington, meanwhile, had 20 players out on academic probation for the first three weeks, then lost starting linebacker/ punter Fetaiagogo Fonoti for 4-6 weeks with a fractured fibula.

"There's been a lot of adversity," Governors coach Randall Okimoto said. "A lot of life lessons learned."

Castle's Lihikai Domingo scored three touchdowns in the first three quarters in helping the Knights to a 34-19 victory over Farrington at Aloha Stadium.

Last night's lesson was, "Never give up."

Farrington trailed 31-7 in the fourth quarter, but closed it to 34-19 with 3:44 remaining on Tanner Fetui's 4-yard touchdown pass from Eti Atonio. The two-point conversion attempt failed, but the Govs got the ball back on the Castle 21-yard line with 26 seconds left. Atonio threw four incompletions to preserve the victory for the Knights.

But it was another costly victory for Castle, which lost linebacker Shayson Suzui to a broken collar bone.

"We've just been hit with a rash of injuries, more than ever before," Knights coach Nelson Maeda said. "We have no choice but to ask everybody to step up and rise to the occasion."
