Defense spending in Hawai'i

Direct U.S. military spending — which includes all salaries, equipment, defense contracts, etc. —Êtotals about $4 billion per year in Hawai'i. Indirect spending — when soldiers spend their paychecks — adds nearly $3 billion more to the state's economy.

The U.S. military spends more per capita in Hawai'i than in any other state except Virginia. For every dollar spent, $1.80 is added to the state's economy. O'ahu gets almost 96 percent of all spending.
