Big Island man dies in crash

A 28-year-old Big Island man was killed and another person seriously injured Friday in a head-on collision in Ka'u.

Johnnie P. Gouveia, of Honaunau was pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital shortly after the 6:42 p.m. wreck.

Police withheld the identity of the driver of the second vehicle, who was taken to Kona Community Hospital in critical condition.

Gouveia was traveling west on Route 11, or Hawai'i Belt Road, driving a 1988 Chevrolet sport utility vehicle. The other driver was traveling east in a gray, 1986 two-door Toyota.

The two collided near the 72-mile marker. Police continue to investigate the cause of the collision.
