Saint Louis holds off Kamehameha, 21-20

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Kamehameha Schools kicker Kepa Gaison's 35-yard extra-point attempt with 33 seconds remaining in the game had the distance but was just wide left last night, preserving Saint Louis' pulsating 21-20 victory at Aloha Stadium.

Damien's Va'a Faualo finds an opening in Pac-Five's defense and runs for a 22-yard touchdown in the first quarter at Aloha Stadium.

Saint Louis recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock, ending the Interscholastic League of Honolulu game for both exhausted teams and a crowd of 7,198. The Crusaders, ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 3-1 overall by winning their ILH opener. Kamehameha, ranked No. 3, fell to 3-1-1 overall and 1-1 in the ILH.

But last night's game showed the two teams appear to be separated by mere feet, or even inches.

Saint Louis went up 21-14 with 51 seconds left after Stanley Nihipali's 16-yard touchdown pass to Shaun Kauleinamoku and Jeremy Shea's extra point.

The Warriors answered on the next play from scrimmage, a 75-yard TD pass from Pono Kam to Aaron Nichols. But Kamehameha was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after the touchdown, forcing Gaison to attempt the extra point from the 25-yard line.

Warriors coach Kanani Souza said he was told the penalty was assessed because one of his players ran onto the field from the sideline without his helmet.

"But he was part of the PAT team, that's why he ran onto the field," Souza said. "To make that kind of call, at that point in the game, in a game of this magnitude ..."

The game certainly was played at a high level throughout.

The first half was mostly a defensive struggle, until Kamehameha finally scored on Waika Spencer's 30-yard touchdown catch from Kam with 1:47 remaining in the first half. The play capped a seven-play, 75-yard drive for the Warriors, and Gaison's extra point made it 7-0.

But Saint Louis immediately answered when Aaron Bain returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown, breaking about five tackles before racing down the right sideline. Shea's extra point tied it at 7-7 with 1:30 left in the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Kamehameha went up 14-7 after Kam threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kamuela Kapanui with 11:48 remaining in the game.

The Crusaders tied it again, however, after Kevin Sullivan scored on a 5-yard touchdown run to cap an 11-play, 74-yard drive with 8:16 left.

Shea later attempted a 44-yard field goal with 3:36 left, but missed wide left.
