Clay 7th after Day 1 in France

Kane'ohe's Bryan Clay is in seventh place after the first day of the decathlon at the Talence Decastar Invitational in France.

Clay, the silver medalist last month at the Athens Olympics, amassed 4,092 points. The leader is Olympic gold medalist Roman Sebrle, who has 4,277 points after the first five events.

The decathlon ends today.

Clay won the 100 meters with a time of 10.76 seconds, to earn 915 points. He was fourth in the long jump, eighth in shot put, 15th in high jump and sixth in the 400 meters. Sebrle had top-five finishes in every event but the 400, where he was ninth.



VOLLEYBALL

UH-Hilo stops BYUH in PacWest match

Hawai'i-Hilo rolled out to a 9-3 lead in the fifth game en route to a 14-30, 30-20, 24-30, 30-20, 15-9 victory over Brigham Young-Hawai'i last night at UHH Gymnasium for its first Pacific West Conference victory of the season.

The Vulcans are 4-8 overall and 1-2 in the PacWest. The Seasiders are 6-5 and 0-3.

Shara Parker had 15 kills and Christina Cooley added 12 for UH-Hilo. Noelle Filimoeatu led BYUH with a match-high 17 kills.

Rose Ramsey had four aces for UH-Hilo.

Both teams struggled offensively. Hilo hit .161 (54 kills, 29 errors), BYUH .098 (54 and 38).



BOXING

Wai'anae's Pelen falls in national semifinals

Nagy Aguilera of Newburgh, N.Y., stopped Keenyn Pahio, of the Kaka'ako Boxing Club, to win the 201-plus division at the Under-19 National Boxing Championships last night at Bushkill, Penn.

Jeremy Bryan of Sumter, S.C., decisioned Wai'anae's Jeffrey Pelen Jr. to advance to the finals of the 141-pound division.

Bryan, the 2004 National Golden Gloves champion, defeated Pelen, 23-15, on Friday. Bryan decisioned Lamar Russ, of Wilmington, N.C., 9-9 (40-35), yesterday to win the title.



BASKETBALL

Vulcans tickets go on sale tomorrow

Tickets go on sale tomorrow for the University of Hawai'i-Hilo Vulcans basketball season.

Season and individual tickets will be sold at the UHH athletics ticket office, located in Building 320A, Room 101. Office hours are from 9 to 11 a.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday. For more information, call (808) 974-7702.



MEETINGS

Pearl City football coach at QB Club

Watson Tanuvasa, Pearl City head football coach, will speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club.

The club luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and meeting at noon at the Pagoda Restaurant Ballroom.

Also scheduled to speak are musician Audy Kimura, a former riflery champion, and Al Minn, retired swimming coach and athletic director.



UH-Tulsa discussion at Na Koa meeting

Head football coach June Jones and members of his staff are scheduled to talk about the University of Hawai'i's upcoming game against Tulsa at the Na Koa Football Club luncheon tomorrow.

Na Koa, the UH booster club, meets at 11:30 a.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Warriors play Tulsa on Saturday at Aloha Stadium.Ê

The coaches will also show game film and analyze Hawai'i's road loss to Rice.



GOLF

Mullen takes 1-stroke lead after second round at Waikoloa

Professional Jerry Mullen shot a 4-under 68 yesterday to take the second-round lead at the 31st Waikoloa Open at the Waikoloa Village Golf Club on the Big Island yesterday.

Mullen was at 2-under par 142 entering today's final round, a stroke ahead of professionals Ron Castillo Jr. and Kevin Hayashi, both former champions of this event. Castillo shot a 71 and Hayashi a 70 yesterday.

After a 79 on Friday, 14-year-old Michelle Wie rebounded with a 2-under 70 yesterday and was tied for 18th overall. Wie got off to a quick start, sinking a birdie on the par-5 first hole and eagling the par-4 second hole.

Jacob Low was the low amateur in the championship flight after a 73-146.

First-round leader Chris Keiter, a Kona professional, shot a 3-over 75 yesterday and also was at 146.

Norman-Ganin Asao and Joe Phengavath, also former Waikoloa Open winners, were at 145.

Dick McClean shot a 2-under 70 and took the second-round lead in the senior professionals flight at 138, three strokes ahead of first-round leader Steven Hookano (74 yesterday), Dan Nishimoto (70) and Dean Prince (70).

The final round begins at 6:30 a.m. today.



CROSS COUNTRY

Smith, Stevens capture BYUH Invitational

BYUH's Chelsea Smith set a course and school record, and Hawai'i Pacific's Matt Stevens set a meet record at the Brigham Young-Hawai'i Cross Country Invitational yesterday in La'ie.

Smith, the defending NCAA Division II champ, won the women's 5-kilometer run in 17 minutes, 22 seconds. Laura Bachmier of Hawai'i-Hilo was second in 19:36, and Jennifer Puzey of BYUH was third in 20:00. BYUH won the team title with a meet-low 21 points, followed by UH-Hilo with 54.

Stevens won the men's 8-kilometer run in 26:39, breaking BYUH's Jonathan Osterland's year-old record by eight seconds. BYUH's Jake Rushton set a school 8-kilometer record in 26:49.

Jeff Lim of Chaminade was third in 26:47. BYUH won team title with 32 points, followed by UH-Hilo with 48.

Kamehameha JV girls first in Calif. meet

Kamehameha's girls placed first yesterday in the junior varsity division for the third consecutive year at the Westmoor High School Invitational at Daly City, Calif.

Maya Coelho was Kamehameha's highest finisher in third place over the 2.4-mile course.

Kamehameha's girls finished third in the varsity division. Haunani Kane was Kamehameha's highest finisher in 25th.
